I just realised that I never posted about this lovely lady who I helped make for Christian Louboutin while I was at Studio XAG. Tricky stuff.
I've been a bit slow on the posting, due to Christmas window madness at Millington and flat hunting. But the windows are up, and the dream pad has been found and is being painted. Although now full of Christmas window glitter. Which I have discovered is indestructible.

I can't believe it, but these chaps (who were just little squirts in their first year when I left university) are graduating this year. And as if having two shows at the end of the year to do wasn't enough, they're having another one in a few weeks! My lovely chum Ros is helping to organise it and it will most probably be amazing.

We took a trip to Ellis island, which used to be where all immigrants were held while the authorities decided whether they would be let into New York or sent home. It's worth a visit, it's very moving to think of what those people had to go through. And coming from a family that has moved around for the last 4 generations, it means a lot to me too.
Top image is the main hall where people would have had to wait to have their papers processed.
Middle image is an eye test to be used for people who were illiterate or whose language didn't use the European alphabet. People found to be ill, mentally or physically, or who were not able to support themselves, were sent home. The US also imposed quotas, different numbers for different countries, and once that number of people had arrived, all those behind them were turned away. Quotas for places like England were always disproportionately higher than places like China.
The bottom image is a campaign poster that would have been common around the turn of the last century.

We took a little train trip upstate to go to Dia:Beacon. Which is, without exception, the most amazing gallery space I have ever seen. You can't really convey it with photos. But there's just so much space! And it's almost entirely lit by natural light. And the work wasn't too bad either!

My particular favourites (apart from this little gem, obviously) were on the subject of prisons, car parks, Holiday Inn, man eating fish and some very dubious photo editing. The two most exciting things at MIT: The ROBOTS! Some students were making robots to stick inside teddies and things which made the workshop look a bit odd with teddy body parts strewn around among robotic arms. The second most exciting thing was this 3D printer that carved your face out of chocolate. I think the brief was to make a 3D printer for under $100. Pretty cool eh?

A friend of Toby's has a brother who is studying at MIT and he took us round the media lab, which is nothing short of awesome! Full of mad scientist students making cool things and getting paid for it by big companies. The top photo is a digital harp that has several sets of strings and people can stand inside it and play it. Next is one of the workshops, below that is a set of shelves just casually full of prosthetic foot prototypes. And this was all just 2 rooms. The whole place was so full of amazing things that I couldn't even begin to document them here!

NY Public Library 100 years exhibition

New York Public Library is having an exhibition of some of the amazing things in their collection to celebrate being around for 100 years. There was so much amazing stuff there, but this really caught my eye. It's an anti Semitic children's book made in Nazi Germany, which is heinous and not why it caught my eye! Click on the image to see the type a bit bigger. I've never seen anything like it, it's so unusual and beautiful. Just such a shame it's in such a book. (click on the image to get a better look).

Well I find myself in New York again. I just can't keep away! I will soon be starting work with Andrea making sets and props for TV, and then just seeing what happens! I really don't have much of a plan. But Toby is working at 2x4 so he at least has a plan.
So far we have been spending far too much money and eating way too much. We're living in "East Williamburg", which turns out to be deepest darkest Bushwick.
So far we have:
Oogled the books at the Strand Bookstore
Wandered round Soho, Chinatown, Lower Manhattan and walked over the Brooklyn bridge.
Walked the Highline and fattened up in the Chelsea Food Market
Spend way too much money at Beacon's Closet
Wandered round Bedford Ave in Brooklyn and Fort Greene.
And met up with the most lovely Kaye Blegvad and Lucy Nurnberg.
Good time have been had.

A love letter for you

I came across this today and thought it was rather cool.
It's a project taking place in Philadelphia where 40 local and international artists have been invited to paint 'love letter' murals on walls visible from the elevated train line, so all those poor commuters have something to smile about in the morning. In total there will be 50 walls, and the project is also including books and sign painting classes.

Release Ai Weiwei

Toby and I went to the Tate modern the other day and I was pleased to see them showing their support for Ai Weiwei, who has recently been detained by the Chinese authorities for dubious reasons. I wont go into detail, but you can read more here. But, if freedom of speech and freedom of expression are important to you then please read about it, spread the word and sign this petition for his release. It has 90,000 signatures already which is amazing, but it could do with more!

The first project I did for Studio XAG has gone in store! We spent all week cleaning up old bikes and making them into these rather fetching sculptures for Fred Perry's new range of vintage looking cycling tops. Cool eh? I think it looks awesome, but if I never have to clean another bike chain again I will be very happy indeed.

The word that comes to mind is SICK> black vinyl, real wood, hyper real flower back drops and little white mushrooms, what's not to love? SO I am going to be at Studio XAG hopefully for a few weeks. I am super excited about this because I absolutely love their work! I have been secretly admiring their work for ages all over Carnaby street, but only recently managed to track down who was behind it all. So I've been a busy bee, making things out of old bikes, making tee pees (see above, for Diesel) and trying my hand at paper sculpture and having a great time. I have been dying to go for ages, but I wanted to take Toby with me so we waited until he got an internship and a visa so now we're off! My US passport arrived in the post the other day, it is all terribly patriotic and over the top. So I am once again an American citizen. I am getting rather nervous and excited at the same time. Flight have just been booked! Now I just need a place to live...

"I love old photos. I admit being a nosey photographer. As soon as I step into someone else’s house, I start sniffing for them. Most of us are fascinated by their retro look but to me, it’s imagining how people would feel and look like if they were to reenact them today... A few months ago, I decided to actually do this. So, with my camera, I started inviting people to go back to their future."

The very talented Daisy Gam is having a little show of her work in Hoxton Square. She does insane pencil drawings that take days and days. At our degree show I spent ages staring at them and noticed that there was always a little gaggle of people oogling them as well. I have got a job making the shop windows for Harvey Nichols! It's so much fun and a lot more creative and relaxed than some other jobs I could mention. We're working on the spring windows at the moment. I can't post any photos just yet but needless to say there's a lot of flowers being cast in resin and plaster, which I am thoroughly enjoying. I'm also helping to make the head pieces for the mannequins which is a little daunting but exciting. I will post some images when I can.

The place next to where I'm working at the moment makes Christmas decorations for all the big shopping centres and high streets around the country. That's what they do all year and nothing else. I keep trying to peek in and see if they're all wearing little elf hats. It would be pretty ironic seeing as the grimy warehouse in South Bermondsey in which they work couldn't be any less Christmassy (although they have put tinsel on the barbed wire around the site). Anyway, the other night I saw all the Carnaby Street decorations from this Christmas just gone spilling out of a skip. I asked if I could have one of the reindeer wearing a space suit. I wasn't allowed.

Paper flowers

I've just finished working at Millington on a job for John Lewis. It was mental. I spent half my time upholstering chairs and sofa with astro turf (bonkers, I know. And not easy on the hands). The other half of my time was taken up with making these mad balls of flowers. I think in total we had something like 500,000 paper flowers (that had to be made out of 3 pieces of paper) and we made a couple of hundred plastic balls covered in them. Each one of the large ones was taking about four hours to cover. We had a proper little factory going. I put a photo in with the lovely Amy in it for scale, so you can see how massive they are. So, coming to a John Lewis near you is 3 weeks of our blood sweat and tears. Enjoy.

Went to see the Susan Hiller exhibition at the Tate Britain the other day with the lovely Kelly Satchell and the Brighton ladies. It was all rather spectacular. I loved these postcard pieces (Dedicated to the Unknown Artists) and a rather cool piece called Witness which was a dark room full of old fashioned small speakers hanging from the ceiling, each one playing recordings of people speaking about their experiences with UFOs. It was all rather cool.

James Barnett (of Brand Barnett fame) and I happened across the Levis store in Regent street recently and saw this window/installation by Gary Card. It was a rather fun maze of polka dotted denim with the merchandise hidden in and around it. I had a great time. I am very keen on this idea of a sort of interactive display that moves from the window into the store.

I'm currently interning at Fiona Leahy Studio where they design and make things for super cool events like the Elle Style Awards which we're working on at the moment. We spent 2 whole weeks folding origami invitations BY HAND. So just incase you got one, I hope you know they were hand crafted. And polished afterwards to get our fingerprints off (metallic paper turns out to be a nightmare). These are a few behind the scenes photos of us setting up the event. The first massive task was to cover the walls of a ballroom with metallic balloons. Enough balloons to fill the conference room next door. Everything else went along the same lines. More 'proper' photos to follow.

"From Monday Jan 31st until Sunday Feb 6th students from UCl and Slade School of Fine Art will be in the windows of Heal's in Tottenham Court Road as part of their Artists in Residence 2011 project. They'll be creating work in their little window studios in front of our very eyes! One student will be making cameras out of household objects and then taking photos around the store and developing them right there!"

Ruins of Detroit

This site is amazing. Parisian photographers Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre have been photographing ruined buildings in Detroit, which is fast collapsing in more ways than one. They say:

"Ruins are the visible symbols and landmarks of our societies
and their changes, small pieces of history in suspension.

The state of ruin is essentially a temporary situation that happens at
some point, the volatile result of change of era and the fall of empires.
This fragility, the time elapsed but even so running fast, lead us to watch them one very last time :
being dismayed, or admire, making us wondering about the permanence of things.

Photography appeared to us as a modest way
to keep a little bit of this ephemeral state."

I have now had the chance to sample everything on the menu and for your information the yasai katsu curry still comes out tops, with amai udon a close second. It's not worth deviating. I saw an awesome exhibition at the British Library the other day about the English Language. It was so interesting I ended up staying for about 3 hours and reading everything. But it also looked pretty good, I liked these awesome flag posters (apologies for the rubbish images, I was trying to be covert). It's meant to read "Don't lag, follow your flag".

This has been doing the rounds on the web recently, but it is truly worthy of all the hype. A chap called John Maloof bought a box of negatives and undeveloped film at an auction. After showing it to a few photographers who all said he'd stumbled upon something important, he decided to google her. It turned out that she'd died recently so unfortunately no one knows much about her. She was a French nanny in Chicago and would roam the streets on her days off taking photos. She was an amateur photographer and never showed her work to anyone in her lifetime. But her work shows something really special, on a parr with any internationally renowned street photographer. Her story and that of how her work came to be found is pretty epic (almost sounds like the plot to a movie), but her work is really something else. Maloof is slowly working his way through over 10,000 negatives and documenting them all on this blog:

I went to this most excellent exhibition at standpoint gallery in shoreditch the other day.
I was all a fluster! I guess I am a true letterpress geek because I was nearly jumping up and down with excitement! Anyway it was curated by Graham Bignell of New North Press and Mr. Richard Ardagh of Elephants graveyard, who I will hopefully be working with next year. Good Stuff!

My lovely friend Isabel Greenberg is getting some of her illustrations published in Nobrow!

It's very exciting to see one of our own Brighton lot doing well. Gives me hope that one day we might all get jobs and perhaps even have enough money to find somewhere decent to live with hot water and everything. Recession? What recession?
